Planning a sensory-friendly family day out

A practical guide to days out for autistic kids and sensory-sensitive families: timing, quiet spaces, social stories and the all-important exit plan.

A successful family day out with sensory-sensitive kids is mostly decided before you leave the house. The venue matters, but timing, preparation and a graceful exit plan matter more.

Pick your moment

Opening time on a weekday is usually the calmest slot anywhere. Many museums, aquariums, play centres and cinemas run dedicated sensory-friendly or quiet sessions — search Can We Go for sessions near you and check the venue's page for current times.

Preview the visit

Social stories and visual schedules take the surprise out of a new place. Many venues publish their own; if not, photos from the venue's website can help you walk through what will happen, step by step.

Find the quiet space first

When you arrive, locate the quiet room or calm corner before you need it. Knowing where you'll go when things get too much means you can get there fast.

Pack the kit, plan the exit

Headphones, snacks, water, a comfort item. Agree on a signal for “time to go”, and pick a nearby Plan B — a park or quiet café — so leaving early still feels like a good day, not a failed one.

Information may change. Check with the venue if a feature is essential to your visit.
