Beach days on wheels
Beach wheelchairs, matting and boardwalks are changing who gets to feel the sand. Here's how to plan a beach day.

Sand and wheels have never been friends. But more and more Australian beaches now have beach matting, ramps to the sand and free beach wheelchairs to borrow.
Beach wheelchairs
These have wide balloon tyres that roll over soft sand, and some can float in shallow water. They're often lent out by surf clubs, councils or lifeguard towers. Many need booking, and some need someone to push. Check the source page for how to borrow one.
Matting and access ramps
Beach matting gives a firmer path across the sand. It's often seasonal and can move with storms or tides, so check recent information before you rely on it.
Don't forget the basics
Shade, accessible parking close by, an accessible toilet or Changing Places, and a patrolled swimming area. Boardwalks and coastal paths are a great way to enjoy the ocean without the sand at all.
Information may change. Check with the venue if a feature is essential to your visit.
